Just days after Paul Ehrlich (the man whose 1968 book “The Population Bomb” predicted billions would starve) passed away, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate the scientist who proved Ehrlich and other doomsayers spectacularly wrong.
Meet Norman Borlaug, the Iowa farm boy who launched the Green Revolution and quite literally saved a billion lives. This is the ultimate story of human ingenuity triumphing over scarcity.

Born in 1914 on a small farm in Cresco, Iowa, Norman Borlaug grew up during the Great Depression. He saw hunger up close and decided to fight it with science. After earning degrees in forestry and plant pathology at the University of Minnesota, he joined a Rockefeller Foundation project in Mexico in 1944 to help farmers battle wheat rust and low yields.
Mexico was starving. Wheat yields were miserable, and rust epidemics wiped out entire crops. Borlaug rolled up his sleeves and started breeding. He crossed thousands of varieties, working dawn to dusk in the fields, even sleeping in a tiny shack. His goal: create wheat that resisted disease, grew fast, and produced more grain per stalk.
The breakthrough came with “semi-dwarf” wheat. Traditional tall varieties fell over in wind. Borlaug’s short, sturdy plants stayed upright, soaked up nutrients, and exploded in yield—sometimes doubling or tripling output. By 1956, Mexico went from importing wheat to exporting it. The Green Revolution had begun.

Word spread. In 1965, India and Pakistan faced famine. Borlaug shipped his miracle seeds. Farmers planted them, applied fertilizer, and irrigated. Yields skyrocketed. India’s wheat production tripled in just a decade. Pakistan followed. Hunger that had seemed inevitable for all of human history simply vanished.
The numbers tell the story. From 1961 onward, global cereal production surged over 250%, far outpacing population growth. Yields more than doubled, while land used for cereals stayed almost flat. This is the Green Revolution in action: technology letting us feed billions more without devouring the planet.

Even better environmentally: Higher yields spared enormous amounts of land. Without Borlaug’s innovations, we’d have needed billions more hectares to match production—land that stayed wild instead. Global agricultural land peaked around the early 2000s; we’re now using roughly the same (or slightly less) to grow far more food. Peak farmland is here, and the trend is downward, restoring habitats while feeding more people.

In 1970, Borlaug became the first agronomist ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee called him “the man who more than any other in our time has helped provide bread for a hungry world.” He accepted it not for himself, but on behalf of the farmers he worked with.

Borlaug never stopped. He helped launch similar revolutions in Africa and Asia, trained thousands of scientists, and fought for science-based agriculture until his death in 2009 at age 95. He famously said, “You can’t build peace on empty stomachs.”
His legacy is the ultimate rebuttal to Malthusian despair: technology, innovation, and human determination can feed the world. While critics later worried about environmental side effects, the alternative—mass starvation—was far worse.
Norman Borlaug didn’t just feed the world, he proved humanity can engineer its way out of crisis. In an age of new challenges, his story reminds us: the best answer to pessimism is bold, evidence based progress. Next time you eat a piece of bread, thank an Iowa farm boy who refused to accept hunger as human destiny.
